US Ambassador to Korea Slashed Five Times By Attacker

US Ambassador to Korea Mark Lippert was slashed five times by a 10 cm knife-wielding attacker yesterday. Ambassador Lippert was attending a breakfast at the Sejong Cultural Institute in Seoul prior to an event at which he would be speaking on US-Korea relations, and North-South Korea relations. The attacker was seated at a table near him, and all of a sudden, got up from his table and rushed toward the Ambassador, slashing him across the face, and wounding him in several places on his left arm. The following article is a translation of the South Korea news report, netizen comments, and pictures of the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

The official said, “Mr. Kim has 6 prior convictions of assault, including ones against foreign officials,” and “he habitually attacked workers at the US Embassy in Korea.”

Kim Gi-jong is the figure who tried to set up a memorial altar for Kim Jong-il in the middle of Seoul. He began working in the Ministry of Unification under the Kim Dae-jung administration in 2002. In 2006 and 2007, he visited North Korea 8 times under the permission from Roh Mu-hyun. Up to recently, he was even supported by Seoul city where Park Won-soon is the mayor. FYI, New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) put a halt on the anti-terrorism legislation. They should kneel down and apologize.

sooh****:

During the Kim Dae-jung and Roh Mu-hyun administrations, Kim Gi-jong was appointed in the Unification Education Committee. He was almost appointed as a university professor, too, at that time. He also visited North Korea at least 8 times. They are truly cancerous bastards in this land…

Thoroughly investigate jongbuk [North Korea following] groups and eradicate them. This is obviously an act of terrorism.

Tens of thousands of Americans devoted themselves in the Korean War. What kind of people are they who bash the US while being apologists for North Korea because North Koreans are supposed to be the same people as us? So North Koreans who are the same people as us shoot at us like that?

After he was appointed as an ambassador in Korea, Lippert has shown affection towards Korea as he learns Korean, blogs in Korean, and gave his newborn son a Korean middle name. He is a very likable person and it is unfortunate that this happened to him. When I watched the news that he got attacked by an assailant in the morning, I was worried about him as if I know him personally. I hope he gets well soon.

Terrorism should disappear and criminals should be strictly punished. I hope they also apply strict laws to far-right groups such as the Korea Parent Federation, bombing at a [allegedly pro North Korean] concert, threatening with a gas tank, etc. The law should be fair to everyone.

이코노미스트님:

The habitual offender who gets violent as he pleases is wrong. Looking at how he tries to justify his terrorism, I doubt he truly has a sense of duty for peaceful unification.

uhaha님:

Funny…what about the Ilbe terrorist’s bombing?

도리도리님:

The incompetent administration is going on about jongbuk [Pro-North Korean sympathizers] to divert attention from their failure in security service?

코만도님:

Kekeke, they began the jongbuk mantra, kekeke.

They’re an incompetent administration that couldn’t even protect an ambassador in their land. Well, they can’t protect their own citizens, so what can I expect? [The Park] administration is idiotic.

브라우니님:

The president of the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation who invited crazy Kim Gi-jong is Hong Sa-deok. Why don’t they investigate that group, too?

지나치게괜찮은넘님:

Those guys who keep talking about a mastermind… Why don’t they investigate the mastermind behind internet comment manipulation first?

Regardless of his ideology or purpose, he should be strictly punished.

They always go on about jongbuk~~~ They always go on about jongbuk~~~ The true jongbuks are Chicken Geun-hye and her daddy~~

야호님:

International media call him a nationalist. This country’s weird logic where a nationalist is not rightist but leftist and the Democratic Party is blamed. The authorities do not mention at all about Hong Sa-deok who allowed Kim Gi-jong to go see the American ambassador. They know well that Kim Young-sam and Lee Myung-bak, these two administrations gave more money to North Korea than Kim Dae-jung and Roh Mu-hyun. How remarkable of the comment-manipulating National Intelligence Service to make people think of Kim Dae-jung and Roh Mu-hyun when it comes to aid for North Korea.

동남아 사랑 ㅋ님: [Responding to above]

Hey, no… You don’t know what you are talking about. The amount of money poured into North Korea by Kim Dae-jung with Hyundai was the biggest ever since the foundation of our country. Kim Jong-il even postponed the summit, asking Dae-jung for money, you skate fish. FYI, Kim Dae-jung was a guy who was born in Gyeongsang-do. Search that on the internet.

So an attack by one unstable individual quickly escalates to “return the death penalty” and “eradicate leftists” discussion? Oh these netizens.

    • ParkJeongher

You should’ve read what the Fox News commentary was:

“Its time for Kim to Nuke the south. Then Korea can rise from the ashes..”
“OBAMA and KERRY are on a mission to have our ambassadors killed!”
“Kerry calls this a ‘senseless’ attack. Not.’outrageous’, ‘cowardly’ etc ? And this man is negotiating with IRAN. Heaven help the United States.”
“Security was not on top of their game…..pull our troops out of South Korea…..that will be an eye opener ! Maybe they’ll know how Israel must feel .”

—obviously koreabang pulled the most entertaining comments out of the bag.

Would you expect anything less from FOX news?…

If you want to reduce bias, you need to watch multiple news stations from around the world as they all have their own secret agendas and alliances to push and hint on during their stories.
I use BBC, Russia Today, CCTV, Al Jazeera English (Which seems to be one of the best). as well as others from time to time such as TIME magazine. Depends on how much time i have on my hands and the stories that interest me.

South Korea today is plagued with north korea lovers like cancer. These individuals are losers of society that hate their country, democracy, freedom, a market economy and most importantly themselves. They should all be deported to the paradise kingdom of kim jong un.

  • AbC

If he’s already on a suspended sentence for assaulting the Japanese ambassador… How is he still able to be seated within several metres of the U.S. ambassador during a lecture?

    • commander

Background checks for attendees of the breakfast meeting where the knife brandishing attack took place were not maded according to the media report.

And the general perception that South Korea is a relatively safe place also contributed to the absence of the constant security detail for Ambassador Lippert, leaving the assailant subdued by other attendees around Mr. Lippert.

      • Xman2014

I’m going to dispute this. He was let in because he had the backings and permission from several lawmakers in the Korean opposition government. They’re now reading out the names of those people in the opposition parties who left encouraging words and words of support on his blogs. Why they would cheer on a crazy violent person who has been convicted of assault 6 times before, is beyond me.

        • commander

If the attacker’s entry was made by a pro-North Korea lawmaker, it is completely reprehensible, and he or she should be subject to investigationd punishmemt according to the probe.

        • ParkJeongher

Under no circustances are assaults on any foreign envoy justified.

My grave concern is that thei incident will cause a deep division among South Koreans, with some accusing others of North Korean followers while others recriminating critics of using this incident as a political maneuver.

With North Korea’s nuclear arsenal swelling when the United States is absrobing itself in the Middle Eastern issues, like Islamic State and the Iran nucleae negotiations, and South Korea is reluctant to draw its reclusive neighbor into multilateral denuclearization talks, I am deeply concerned aa well that if this incident and possible political exploitation could thwart any discourse on the necessity of engagin North Korea in the blind description of liberal-minded politician as pro North Korean symphatizers, though engagement policy championed by them is based on the robust ROK-US alliance and strong deterrance against North Korean threats of missiles and nuclear arms.

    • prin12

Political exploitation or not, I believe there is an overwhelming consensus among the south korean public, left and right. That is, if you want to sympathize with north korea, please leave our country and go to north korea.

      • commander

I believe there is the convergence of views among South Korean experts, left of right. That is, if you want to understand what others say in a way that you like, please do more readings and improve you comrprehension ability.

        • prin12

I get what you are saying. But you obviously don’t have the ability to understand simple comprehension if you’re not getting the point. And you could work on your spelling too.

You point was gotten across. But you don’t know what you are saying though you think you are a know it all. lol And you could do soul-searching for yourself.

Not to be nitpicky, but the beginning of this koreaBANG article says Mark Lippert was attacked “yesterday”, when he was attacked on March 5th. Considering this was posted March 9th, and no Korean text appears when I hover my cursor over the English (implying this isn’t just a translation of an original Korean text), I can only assume this is an error.

Other than that, thanks for covering this.

    • Xman2014

KB is just translating an article that happened right after the attack. I’m guessing it takes few days for KB to translate the materials then post them here.

      • Guest

I’m referring to the text before the presumed translation: http://i.imgur.com/uHBXEgf.png

It’s not a big deal; I just thought I’d point it out.

  • Xman2014

I wish South Korean government will just do one thing, and one thing only.

They should just open the door wide open, and say to the people, if you think North Korea is such a nice place to live, and you want to go there to live, then go right ahead, nobody’s stopping you – here’s the door. But once you leave out this door, you ain’t coming back because the trip is one way.

I don’t know why the South Korean government even bother to make leaving for North Korea, illegal. Just let them go.

    • koreanhawk

Korea is the US’s great friend but this really pisses us off. You need to handle this severely or you will lose many friends.

These kinds of people love the attention. Possibly a single child who most likely failed at succeeding in Korea. In his demented, simple mind the single explanation for his current status would be problems in the society. Don’t give him any attention, he doesn’t deserve it. Put him in a maximum security prison, and let him see his actions bring the US and Korea closer together.

The most praiseworthy mement about this incident is when Ambassador Lippert, after going surgery for gashes on the right cheek of his face and his left wrist, said on his tweet account, “Let’s go together,” in a display of professonalism working as a US top emissary, and of his affectionate attempts to better understand South Korea.

  • FYIADragoon

Seriously, Korea needs to start looking for its balls again. Because I think it lost them a while ago. Why was a criminal even allowed with kms of an official at an event?

    • Iban4yesu

we are doing just fine. why don’t you look for yours?

  • Balkan

One thing that baffles me is that how Kim had managed to slash the ambassador five times before he was restrained. How is it possible it took the security detail such a long time to react? Considering his views, wasn’t he considered a high risk individual? Were there no metal detectors/scanners for the guests? Someone could have brought a gun or a bomb. The security detail failed and the person in charge of it should be sacked.

Korea is still a wonderfully safe place for us Americans. Can you imagine a middle aged, obese, western man trying to squeeze into a Kimono, an Ao Dai or a Cheongsam he would be ridiculed by the locals. But I can change into my Hanbok and skip down the streets of Itaewon with my skirts swirling, sighing like a schoolgirl. The Korean people love me for it, when they see me they just can’t stop pointing and giggling.

    • Iban4yesu

  • bultak23

dupers delight, i would say this slasher guy is just plain evil.

    • Iban4yesu

He was angry and frustrated. The US millitary which came to Korea 70 years ago to “liberate ” Korea from Japan has never bothered to leave, now Korea is a virtual u.s colony. The new development which he opposes is conveniently and callusly pitching Korea against China, not speaking of antagonizing North Korea even more. Would you think Americans who fought against the brits in the Revolution were also purely evil for wanting the independence?

      • bultak23

the dictatorship of the proletariat is nothing more than a collective political entity that becomes the equivalent of the ancient and hated despot. so if you mean an internal revolution in north korea to free its good citizens from the bloodsucking kim regime and to restore the vote, then yes.
